Some lively training ground action has given Gillingham boss Steve Evans a selection dilemma ahead of their weekend match against Rotherham United.
Lee Hodson and Ben Pringle – a star player during Rotherham’s rise from League 2 to the Championship – have both looked sharp after shrugging off niggles.
Hodson has been carrying a groin injury since the summer and Pringle has been trying to shake off a troublesome hamstring strain. Both appear to have come out the other side, giving Evans a headache.
The Gills boss said: “He was excellent in a training game on Tuesday and he certainly comes into the equation.”
Hodson can play either side of defence or in midfield.
Speaking about Pringle’s condition, Evans said: “I am not sure if the medical staff have given him a potion but he was very good Tuesday. Maybe it’s because Rotherham are coming up!
More on the Gills;
“He was magical for Rotherham, a special, special player.”
The Gills beat Accrington 1-0 on Saturday and Evans will need to decide whether to stick or twist.
He said: “Normally there are debates about our team for Saturday (between the management) but this week there have been a difference of opinions.
“It is credit to the players who have not had a lot of game time and how hard they have been pressing.”
Another decision to make is who to play at right-back. While Hodson has been nursing an injury and Barry Fuller has been injured, youngster Jack Tucker has impressed while covering. Fuller is now back in training and available for selection.
Evans said: “We will have a plan to try and combat what Rotherham do and try and win a football match.”
Matty Willock is training but the latest time-scale for his return is mid-November, although Evans expects that by then he will be match ready.
“He is a top, top player and will be like a new signing for us,” said Evans, of the former Manchester United midfielder.
