The fight’s not over, Gills boss Justin Edinburgh has insisted.
A shock 3-2 home defeat to Shrewsbury on Saturday has left Gillingham facing a battle to keep alive their promotion hopes.
Edinburgh’s men have gone six games without a win but they aren’t giving up despite dropping out of the play-off places for the first time this season.
“We are not out of it,” insisted Edinburgh. “We are reliant on other results but I know this group will continue to try and turn it around.
“We are one point behind (the final play-off place) and there are six points to play for. Anything can happen; there might be another twist.”
The Gills have struggled to find the form that led them to four straight wins over the Christmas period, claiming just four wins from 19 games since then.
The loss to Shrewsbury was the third successive defeat on home soil, leaving them in seventh place, just three months after topping the division.
“I feel hurt and I know the players do, they are devastated,” said Edinburgh, after their latest setback, in a game where Gillingham had enough chances to win.
“We should have won and we didn’t. We will all have to seriously lick our wounds but that will be my job to lift the players, to refocus and know that we have to go to Burton and win – it’s as simple as that.”
Gillingham have two games left to save their season.
They travel to Burton on Saturday and end the season with a home game against Millwall.
