Gillingham fans thought their night couldn’t get any worse after losing to the league’s bottom team on Tuesday - but it did.
They had travelled 250 miles to Plymouth for an evening fixture, which the Gills lost 3-1, but those travelling on the club’s official supporters’ coach were faced with more heartache before the night was out.
A broken fan belt on the King’s Ferry VIP coach meant they didn’t leave Plymouth’s Home Park stadium until around 11.30pm, almost two hours after the game had finished.
Some of the fans took to Twitter to share their misery.
Lee Clifton saying: “The fitter has the wrong belt for the coach and now has to go back to the yard to get the right belt, and that will take another half an hour, you couldn’t make this up.”
The coach was set to arrive back in Gillingham at 5am, with fans having set off for the match at midday.
They paid £33 for a ticket on top of the £19 adult matchday admission.
Gillingham boss Steve Lovell bemoaned his side's performance.
He said: “We didn’t get near them first half, basically, that is what it was. I thought at times it was very, very poor, as poor most probably a half as we have had."
