Gillingham are hoping to land a Premier League striker.
Boss Justin Edinburgh is closing in on a season-long loan deal for a top-flight youngster, with the unnamed player due at Priestfield this week for talks.
Edinburgh currently has three senior strikers in his squad and wants one more to complete his attacking line-up.
“We maybe need a target man for the strikers that we have to play off,” said Edinburgh. “We missed that presence sometimes last year. It is something we are looking at.”
The signings last week of Mark Byrne and Billy Knott mean the central midfield area is all-but-complete, with the Gills boss just waiting on Josh Wright to agree his deal.
While a striker is on Edinburgh’s wishlist, he is also looking at other areas as well.
He added: “All being well then hopefully that (deal for a striker) can be concluded.
"Then we’ll look at a wide player who can give us some width if needed to maybe be a game-changer, and then look at central defence.”
Edinburgh is still waiting to conclude a deal for keeper Stuart Nelson, along with midfielder Wright.
