Gillingham boasted their biggest home league attendance of the season on Saturday.

And boss Peter Taylor admitted his team let them down.

A sending off for home captain Doug Loft was followed by three goals for a Scunthorpe team who started the day second from bottom in League 1.

Gillingham’s previous best League 1 crowd was 5,344 for the home match against Walsall which finished goalless.

On Saturday over 7,000 turned up – boosted by a £1 for a kid promotion – but the team failed to produce the goods on the pitch.

It was a fact not lost on the Gills boss.

He said: “I am surprised and disappointed but I can only hold my hands up and say that’s not good enough. We have let a lot of people down.

“It was a very disappointing day, not just the result. You don’t like losing any game but for me, apart from the first minute, we didn’t have enough about us.

“After the preparation and everything about the boys and the training sessions I was expecting something very positive from us.

“There were seven-odd thousand people here, which is a fantastic attendance. They are the days you are desperate to show what you are capable of. Unfortunately we have shown a negative side.”

Scunthorpe travelled with 162 fans in a total attendance of 7,042. Gills average in the league before the weekend was 5,120.
