Gillingham’s relegation scrap is going down to the wire.
A 1-0 win for Port Vale at Walsall on Tuesday night leaves the Gills just a point clear of the drop zone with one game to play.
Vale went into the game without a goal or a point from their previous five matches,
The Gills now travel to Northampton Town – managed by former boss Justin Edinburgh – needing a win or hoping that Port Vale slip up in their final game at promotion-chasing Fleetwood.
Gillingham’s better goal difference means that they still have the edge. A Vale draw at Fleetwood is unlikely to be good enough, providing the Gills don’t suffer a heavy loss.
The worst case scenario for the Gills would be a Vale win and a defeat at the hands of Edinburgh’s Northampton. That would mean League 2 football for the Gills next season.
Edinburgh is unlikely to lose any sleep over sending his former team down, having been axed by the club in January.
The Gills were eight points clear of the drop zone and sitting in 17th when Edinburgh was fired. He was quickly appointed manager at Northampton where he guided them to a mid-table finish.
Gillingham are likely to sell their 944 ticket allocation for the trip to Sixfields, with fans hoping they don’t experience a repeat of what happened at Wycombe back in 2010.
They were relegated that day after a string of results went against them.
