Gillingham boss Justin Edinburgh has completed the signing of Chelsea defender Jordan Houghton on loan until January.
Houghton has played for England at under-16, under-17 and under-20 level and was captain of Chelsea's under-21 side last season.
The 19-year-old is described by Chelsea's website as "combative, committed and confident with the ball at his feet." He can also operate in midfield.
He scored in the FA Youth Cup final win over Fulham in 2013/14 when operating in a defensive midfield role.
Edinburgh said: “I’m really pleased Jordan has chosen to join us until January.
“He chose us over a number of other clubs and I’m pleased to have secured the signing.
“He is a very hungry young player who has had an excellent grounding at Chelsea; he won the Youth Cup the season before last, playing an integral part in the process, and has represented his country at three different age groups.
“He is a terrific addition to our squad and I look forward to working with him.”
