Gillingham boss Justin Edinburgh admits his squad is being stretched to the limit.
Bradley Dack and Max Ehmer are injury doubts ahead of their weekend clash with Bury after both picked up knocks on Tuesday night in the League Cup win at Southend.
It’s the latest blow to Edinburgh whose side have endured a series of injury woes since returning from their summer break.
Aaron Morris, Lee Martin and Bradley Garmston are already out long-term and the Gills face an anxious wait before this weekend to find out the extent of the latest injuries.
Ehmer was taken to hospital after being knocked out and Dack limped off with a knee injury. Both had scans during the week and the Gills are assessing those ahead of the Bury match on Saturday.
Edinburgh said: “Hopefully, they are not serious (injuries) and they can both be back at the weekend, or if not, Tuesday. We will assess it.
“The squad is being stretched. It is able to cope at the moment but I am not sure how many more we can take.”
The Gills boss was able to make four changes to his starting XI on Tuesday but those options to make changes are shortening.
Edinburgh hopes to be able to make some more signings before the transfer window closes on August 31.
He said: “We made changes and those boys who didn’t make Saturday were close.
“With the quality we have in the squad, we don’t think we are weakening it.
“We are going to need one or two more before the window closes – defence and in midfield maybe – but we think we have great competition and that is paying dividends at the moment.”
