Gillingham's 2016/17 team picture includes Luke Norris but Lee Martin and Aaron Morris are absent

Gillingham lined up for their team photo on Saturday and all eyes were on who was in and who was out.

Luke Norris, who seems destined for a move away from the club, was among the 23 senior pros lining up with their manager Justin Edinburgh.

Norris is unlike to play any part in the start of the season for the Gills while he talks to clubs about a move away.

Boss Justin Edinburgh said: “Luke has had talks with some clubs and I would expect something to happen.

“I can’t put a timescale on that but if it happens it has to be before the end of August because there is no emergency windows anymore, the system closes.

“I would be surprised if something doesn’t happen in the next week or two.”

Injured pair Aaron Morris and Lee Martin were both absent as both are long-term injuries.

Martin underwent an operation on Monday to the ankle which he broke at Leyton Orient on Saturday and he could be missing between nine months and a year.

Morris could also be facing the same length on the sidelines with cruciate ligament damage. Both seem unlikely to play any part in the 2016/17 campaign.

Chairman Paul Scally said: “You feel for them and you feel for their families, because they will be devastated.

“While we are upset as a club because we have just signed the players on two-year contracts. They have both got injuries that look like meaning both will be out for a year and they could be even worse than that.

“You feel sorry for the players and what they are going through.”

Talks remain ongoing with several players about coming into the club but there were no new faces in the team picture.

Edinburgh said: “Obviously they have to be in before the end of August but preferably we would like them in before the start of the season.”
