Max Ehmer was named man-of-the-match on Saturday but he wasn’t happy.
Gillingham’s on-loan centre-back admitted one lapse in concentration proved costly.
Ehmer said: “I can’t be too happy with myself. We didn’t win. We conceded a goal. There is only so much you can take from a loss but we have to put it behind us.”
The Gills were briefly down to 10 men when Barnsley scored their winner as Joe Martin wasn’t ready to replace injured Bradley Garmston.
The defence may have thought the danger had passed when Mason Holgate made a mess of his 56 minute chance, but Ben Pearson’s follow-up was parried by keeper Stuart Nelson, and George Waring pounced on the loose ball.
It turned out to be the only goal of the game but there was no finger-pointing, said the German defender.
“As players, we can’t switch off and I think we did for that moment, all of us.
“We didn’t play well as a team but you can’t pick out individuals.
“We are a together dressing room and we don’t point the finger at anyone. People will get dug out if they have to on the pitch but we are a together team. We have to learn from that. These things happen in football.
“It just wasn’t good enough as a team.
“We are disappointed because we feel like we could have beaten them. If we played a little bit better we would have won that.
“We know we didn’t play our best and if we were a couple of gears up from where we should have been then we would have won. It was frustrating but the good thing is that we have another game on Tuesday (at Swindon) to turn it around.”
