Gills boss Justin Edinburgh has ended his search for a new goalkeeper after being won over by Stuart Nelson.
Edinburgh made Nelson available for transfer at the start of pre-season after being unable to guarantee the player the no.1 shirt.
At the end of last season Glenn Morris took over from Nelson between the sticks.
But a string of impressive pre-season performances from 33-year-old Nelson and an attitude to match has left Edinburgh to reverse his decision.
“I think you always have to be ready to change your decisions,” said the Gills boss.
“The decision has been made by Stuart’s approach to returning from the close season and his attitude has been excellent.
“He has been very positive and his performances have been outstanding and that is a decision I have changed.
“I now don’t think it is necessary to bring another goalkeeper to the club and Stuart is fighting Glenn for the no.1 spot.”
Asked whether he knew who would be no.1 come the season opener against Sheffield United, Edinburgh said: “That is a big call.
“What I do know is that I can rely on either one of them and whoever one is called upon we have a very capable goalkeeper.”
