Goalscorer John Marquis hopes Saturday’s point turns out to be a valuable one.
Marquis cancelled out Doncaster’s opener to earn the Gills a share of the spoils at Priestfield in a game even he admitted can’t have been great to watch.
He said: “It was a hard fought point. Both teams played the same formation, counteracting each other, and conditions were difficult.
“It was a bit windy and the pitch wasn’t the best. It wasn’t a great spectacle on the eye but it could be a valuable point come the end of the season.”
Marquis made it seven goals in 11 appearances for the Gills since signing on loan from Millwall.
He netted his latest against former teammate Stephen Bywater, thanks in part to the wind.
Marquis said: “I spoke to Bys afterwards and he said it held up a lot as I went for it.
“After seeing their free-kick, which was probably a bit over hit and ended up being a shot on target, I knew it was going to hold up, especially as it was an inswinger.
“I was just glad to get enough contact on it to take it into the goal.”
That goal came shortly after Harry Forrester’s direct free-kick looped over Gills keeper Stuart Nelson.
“The wind took it and I am not sure if he meant it but he said he did so fair play,” said Marquis.
“Nels will be a little disappointed with it and he held his hands up after and said he could have done better but he has been fantastic for us. He has kept us in a lot of games recently.”
Either Marquis or striker partner Cody McDonald have netted in six of the last seven and the Millwall loanee is enjoying the chance to develop a lethal partnership.
“I felt like it clicked straight away,” he said.
“I get hold of it, he makes great runs off me and it has just worked and we have been sharing the goals.
“We have struck off quite well at the moment and we hope it can continue for the remainder of the season and see where it takes Gillingham and ourselves.”
