Defender Barry Fuller is an injury doubt ahead of the weekend game against Fleetwood Town.
Gillingham boss Steve Evans has given him until today (Thursday) to get back on the training pitch after picking up nasty knock to his knee in the game at Sunderland.
Evans said: “It’s a collision with his knee. It is nothing major and if he is not fit for this weekend then he will be for the following weekend.
“We are hopeful that the medical team will get him on the grass Thursday (today). He was a lot better in the early part of the week but he needs to have the same progression to Thursday because to play for me you need to train Thursday and Friday.
“I have always had a rule that it doesn’t matter if you are the best player at the club, or a regular, you have to be there when we are doing the real detailed work, they have to be there, if they are not they miss.”
Evans believes he has enough options to cope, even if it might mean a reshuffle.
Stuart O’Keefe has played in that position before in the Championship and Alfie Jones could also slot in. Jack Tucker has also played there before, even if he’s not a natural.
Evans admitted: “We took a risk (with the size of the squad) to get some quality. I am sure Gills supporters would rather see 17-18 players than having seven sitting with tracksuits in the stand not being able to get on because they are not good enough.”
