Medway Rugby Club’s under-18 girls completed a superb double a week after being crowned Kent champions.
A win over Hove saw the Medway girls clinch the London and South East Regional Cup.
Spirits were high in the team as they headed into the match. Never before had the Medway girls’ section been in such a big final.
The team got off to a fabulous start, executing their gameplan well, with forwards and backs combining to break down the Hove defence. After 10 minutes of continued pressure, Medway scored a try in the corner.
The pressure continued throughout the first half and two more unconverted tries saw Medway take a 15-0 lead going into half-time.
Hove were rejuvenated in the second half and fought back hard, scoring a try just after the break, but Medway didn’t panic. Captain Molly Errington energised the Medway girls who then scored the next try to make it 20-5.
In the last play of the match, Marisa Gould scored the best try of the game, following some excellent attacking play, to make the final score 25-5, crowning Medway champions for the first time ever.
At the after-match presentation Errington commented: “The team spirit, energy and skill by the team represented our whole season of learning, and how far we’ve come as a team.”
