Manager Paul Piggott says keeping Chatham up would rank alongside anything he’s achieved in management as his team prepare to face bottom side Godalming.
Chats could be as little as four points from safety, with a game in hand on Guernsey, if they beat their fellow strugglers at Maidstone Road on Saturday.
Piggott, whose CV includes back-to-back Kent Invicta League titles at Hollands & Blair, has always maintained he could keep Chats in Ryman League Division 1 South.
And if they follow up last weekend’s win at Walton Casuals with another three points, then Piggott’s optimism may not be as misplaced as some believe.
He said: “If we stay up it would be up there with anything I’ve done in management. It’s a big challenge but we’re up for the challenge and we’re giving it everything we’ve got.
“We’ve made it hard for ourselves, I’m not trying to kid anyone but one of the reasons I’ve stayed positive is because of the games we have left. Of the eight games remaining, five of them are against teams around us, starting with Godalming.
“Teams like Godalming are average sides, along with us, because we have been average. It’s whoever wants it more on the day.”
Chatham hope to name an unnamed side and that will be a big help.
Piggott made a change in goal last weekend with Lewis Lawlor, who’s joined from Tonbridge, taking Alex Hyde’s place. Lawlor looked confident on his debut and will keep the No.1 shirt.
Piggott said: “It’s an area where I felt we needed to make a change. Alex wasn’t happy at all and rightly so – no player should be happy when they’re left out.
“It was tough to make the change but I think it’s the right decision.”
