Kevin Horlock praised Chatham's work-rate after their 4-1 win over Guernsey on Tuesday.
In his first home game as manager, the former Manchester City midfielder saw Chats concede the first goal but recover in the best possible fashion.
After going four games without a win and more than four hours without scoring, this was an emphatic return to form for Horlock's new side.
He said: "It’s not surprised me. I know we’ve not picked up wins in the away games but I’ve seen the quality we’ve got in the squad. They’re young, they’re willing to learn and tonight it all came together.
"In the successful teams that I’ve been part of, that have gone on to bigger and better things, we’ve had a team spirit.
"Yes, we’ve had good players in there but we had more than that, lads that wanted to work their socks off not only for themselves but for the team, for each other, demand off each other and I think they showed that tonight.
"They ran themselves into the ground. Yes, we had a lot of very good performances throughout the team which obviously helps but they’re a good bunch of lads."
Right-winger George Humber equalised two minutes after Guernsey had gone in front and he completed a hat-trick in the second half.
Horlock said: "He was brilliant. If you ask George himself, his favourite position is probably the centre striker and that’s what I’m on about, the lads having that mentality and that willingness to work hard, even if they’re not in their favourite position.
"He deserved his goals."
