Gillingham sit top of League 2 with five wins from seven games but manager Neil Harris knows there’s more to come from his team.
Up next for the Gills is a visit to Priestfield from a Morecambe side, who have lost both of their away league fixtures to date.
Harris’ team returned to the top of the table after last Saturday’s 1-0 victory at home to Harrogate Town.
He said: “[Being top] is important, it builds belief and confidence, the fans are still demanding a little bit more because we have lacked a bit of end product [in the last game] and I get it. But at the moment we are doing enough, doing enough to win games.
“I have been clear, we have won seven out of 10, a great effort in the space of four-and-a-half weeks. We are top of the table after seven games but there is more to come from the group, for us to keep winning we are going to have to keep producing more.”
All five Gillingham league wins have been by a 1-0 scoreline, a solid start for the optimists, but a lack of goals for the pessimists.
Harris said: “I do feel there are important players for us still not hitting the levels that they can hit and will hit in the future.
“It is important I get the rotation right, making sure I protect those players at the right times but what I am keen on is enhancing the younger players in the group as well.
“We have spoken about needing a bit more creativity, a spark, and I was asked about the 1-0 wins (last week) and I said it doesn’t matter how they come, we just have to get them. I am thankful we did.
“What was key (last Saturday) was the amount of possession we had, the amount we dominated the ball and the amount of times we went over the top, played through them, round the outsides.
“Did we have quite enough desire or quality in that final third? No, but we have to build that.
“That’s four wins out of five at home. We have played a lot of away games in the league and it was a strong performance off the back of the Colchester defeat (losing 3-0), but we have got to match those levels and a little bit more from now on.”
Gillingham’s busy early-season schedule is now easing off with a run of Saturday-to-Saturday fixtures. It will give some of their players a well-earned breather. Playing a match on the hottest day of the year last Saturday didn’t make it easy.
“It has come at a great time,” Harris said. “Up until September 9 we had played 10 games of football, it’s absolutely ridiculous the amount of football we’ve played.
“I said to the boys, ‘I can’t praise you highly enough as a group, that’s seven wins out of 10 games’. Yes, I had my say after Grimsby, really disappointed in the performance and probably animated afterwards and probably disappointed with myself with the team that I picked, but seven out of 10 - what a great achievement.
“We can’t rest on that, we can’t stand still, we need more and players coming back from injury will give us that boost.”
