Gillingham’s caretaker management team are taking a firm stance with the squad.

Steve Lovell – one of four men in charge – made it clear what he expects from the player.

He said: “They are either going to toe the line with us, roll their sleeves up and have a go, or go and get another club.

“I can’t have people around here who are not going to try.

“I might be back doing the under-18s next week but while I am here and given the opportunity that is the way I work.

“Hopefully we can do that and when a new manager comes in it will be a little better for him when he does.”

Lovell believes the squad’s attitude is right but won’t stand for anyone who doesn’t pull their weight.

“There are a great bunch of lads but you can’t have one around,” he said.

“If they want to take on the advice and work hard, I have got all the time in the world for them and I will stand by them, but if they don’t, there is no point them being around here.”
