Australian newcomer Chris Herd made a positive start to his Gillingham career.
Despite his new team losing out to Millwall in the EFL Trophy, Gills boss Justin Edinburgh was pleased with the performance of the former Aston Villa player.
Herd signed on Monday for the remainder of the season and Edinburgh said: “I thought he was excellent, absolutely first class.
“He was aggressive and showed his desire to make the first goal. He attacked the ball and made sure it didn’t leave the box, he kept it alive. He will be a massive signing.”
Herd made his Premier League debut against Manchester United six years ago and went on to make 42 appearances for Villa, scoring twice, including one against Liverpool.
He has had a number of loan spells, including one at Wigan where he worked under Gills assistant David Kerslake. It was that link that led to him being given a chance to impress at Priestfield.
Herd was handed a role on the right of a midfield three in the week but can fill a variety of positions, something that was key to Edinburgh making a move for the player.
Edinburgh said: “Chris’s versatility will be a big boost for us given the relentless nature of the League 1 season and I know fans will love his energy and work ethic.
“He brings his Premier League and international experience into the dressing room, which is invaluable.”
