Midfielder Jake Hessenthaler's 100th appearance for Gillingham ends early after he has his tooth knocked out at Sheffield United

Jake Hessenthaler’s 100th appearance was one he won’t forget in a hurry.

He was recalled to the starting XI on Saturday but lasted just half an hour after receiving a blow to the face.

Hessenthaler lost a tooth but with the club physio unable to stop the bleeding, boss Justin Edinburgh made a quick change.

The 21-year-old midfielder had his tooth glued back in while the game restarted and was due to have the nerve removed.

Edinburgh said: “It was a shame for him. There was no malice in the challenge, it was fair and just one of those things that happen.

“It’s unfortunate for him because he has got himself back in then has to come off and couldn’t finish the game.”

Hessenthaler’s recall to the side came after some impressive recent performances on the road.

Edinburgh said: “He has been unlucky. He played well when we went to Southend and we needed the same kind of performance from him but unfortunately he couldn’t see the game out.

“I will always pick the team that I think can win the game.”
