Jake Hessenthaler has played himself back into manager Justin Edinburgh’s plans.
The 22-year-old midfielder has barely had a sniff this season and he has yet to make a start in the league.
But he played out the whole game against Millwall in the EFL Trophy on Tuesday, his first appearance since meeting Luton in the same competition at the end of August.
Edinburgh was frustrated with certain individuals in the 2-1 defeat at the Den but Hessenthaler wasn’t one of them.
The Gills boss said: “There were some good performances. Deji Oshilaja's was immense again, Elliott List and Rory Donnelly caused them problems up top and Jake Hessenthaler, Chris Herd and Josh Wright in the middle of the park were very good.
“They put in performances that deserved to be in a winning side but unfortunately they weren’t because of errors by others. Jake has had to wait very long for that performance but he has played himself back into contention.”
Gills skipper Wright - left on the bench in the last two league games - could also be set for a recall at home to Oldham this weekend.
Edinburgh said: “Wright came back in after a bit of loss of form and he performed. Paddy (Emmanuel Osadebe) is playing out of position but he gives his all.”
