Holcombe Men were beaten 5-2 by Old Georgians on Saturday while the Women’s team lost 1-0 at home to the University of Birmingham

While Holcs’ Men’s 1s lost 5-2 against reigning champions Old Georgians, the W1s were on the wrong end of a 1-0 scoreline against visitors University of Birmingham.

The Men’s Premier Division match was a meeting of two teams with 100% records and it produced an exciting affair.

Both had won all three of their opening matches – Kwan Browne’s men heading into the weekend with wins over Wimbledon, Cardiff & Met and Hampstead & Westminster.

The sides met three times last season – once in each phase. Ashley Jackson’s Old Georgians won all three meetings. Jackson – a former Holcombe player – included several others who were up against their old team.

Holcombe found themselves three down, with ex-Holc Phil Roper and Sam Ward among the scorers, inbetween an effort from Tom Carson

Mubashar Ali got Holcombe’s first of the afternoon from a penalty corner and Teague Marcano added another, as Holcs threatened a fightback at 3-2 down at the end of the third quarter.

The Old Boys responded, however, with Carson netting again on 61 minutes and Ward’s second of the day completing the scoring.

Holcombe ended the weekend third in the table - with Old Georgians sitting top, boasting four wins from four

Earlier on at Holcombe Park there had been a single-goal defeat for Holcombe Women.

The University of Birmingham side won it with a 23rd minute goal from Lily Sokhi.

Holcombe had been looking to return to winning ways but suffered a second straight defeat. It was a first win for Birmingham and a second defeat for Holcome, who sit mid-table.

Holcs had started their Premier Division campaign with wins over Wimbledon and Bowdon.

Defeat also ended the run of goals from New Zealander Olivia Shannon, who had been looking to continue her impressive scoring run, having netted in each of the first three matches.

Birmingham included former Holcombe players Lottie Bingham and Izzy Shelley in their line-up.

Premier Division action returns to Holcombe Park this coming Saturday.

Holcombe Men will be looking to bounce back from their first loss (October 19) when they host Surbiton (6.30pm pushback).

Prior to that game, the W1s are at home to early leaders Reading - a team who have won all four of their opening fixtures, scoring 18 goals in the process. Reading beat Sutton Coldfield 7-2 on Saturday.
