Gillingham goalkeeper Glenn Morris is confident their form will turn.

A scrappy own-goal was enough to beat them at Carlisle United on Saturday and leave the Gills sitting fourth bottom in League 2 with six games played.

With just one league goal scored in those six matches any pre-season confidence among supporters is quickly disappearing but experienced campaigner Morris is sure better times are around the corner.

Speaking after the 1-0 weekend loss, Morris said: “You can’t hide from it, we haven’t scored enough goals, but that could have been another 0-0, we have had a few, another 0-0 would have been something to build on.

“We have to start winning some games and scoring goals and I am sure we will, I am sure it will turn, it is still early but it is not the start we would have wanted and what we set out to start the season with, we just have to roll our sleeves up and go again.

“I am not overly worried, we have been solid, we limited them (Carlisle) to very few chances, most teams this season we have, that side of it has been good. We are building well going forward it is just that final bit of quality which will come, we just need it to come sooner rather than later.

“At the minute maybe there is a lack of confidence with that side of it, but it will take a goal like they scored against us, maybe a scrappy one, to hit someone and go in, then we will get two, three or four, that is the way football works, it will come I am sure.

"At the moment all you can do is work hard on the training ground, work hard when you get a chance to play and make sure that when you do get a chance (to score) it goes in and at the other end you do your job and stop it going in.”

Carlisle’s winner came 10 minutes into the second half, a stabbed off-target effort from Jon Mellish hitting Gills defender Max Ehmer and going in past Morris.

Reacting to that defeat, the keeper said: “We’re very disappointed, we started the game really well, it felt like we were on the front foot, probably the better team, without creating too many chances in the first half, it felt like we was in the ascendancy.

“Second half they turned it up a little bit and we couldn’t really deal with it, we needed to see that 10 minute spell out and I think that would have been it but they get a scruffy goal, it hits someone and goes in, it is what we need at the minute, once we get one of those sorts of goals we will go on and get a few more.

“It was very disappointing to concede, they were at the corner flag, a little one-two, he comes in and toe pokes it across the box and it hits one of our players and goes in. It is one of those goals that wins a game of very few chances, on another day it might have been up the other end but it wasn’t. We have to keep going, work hard and it will come.”
