Doug Loft scored Gillingham’s late equaliser on Saturday but admitted he was too embarrassed to celebrate.

The Gills captain netted from distance to rescue a point for his team at Priestfield.

“I didn’t mean it,” said the 28-year-old, who was back in the squad after missing the previous four games through injury.

“I crossed the ball in before that but nobody got on it. I thought I would put another one in and then I saw it go in, which was nice.

“I felt a little bit embarrassed about celebrating so I just stood there.”

The goal ensured the Gills maintained their unbeaten run at home, which now stretches to nine games in all competitions.

Gillingham were trailing to an 11th-minute goal after a poor first half. Loft’s equaliser came a minute from the end of normal time.

“We battered them second half,” said the skipper.

“We have got a never-say-die attitude and great character in the lads and that is showing in games. We have to begin the games better and from the start rather than the second 45 minutes.”
