Match-winner Doug Loft admitted his goal was a fluke.

The Gills skipper aimed for the far post with his 88 minute cross and was as surprised as anyone to see it go in.

“I didn’t mean to score but the gaffer always says aim for the back stick,” said the 27-year-old. “I did and it went in.

“I thought Bradley Dack was going to score and it was even better when he missed it and it went in. I will take that one!

“When you cross from there you usually aim for the back stick and that’s what I was doing. It went in and hopefully I will kick on now and get more goals.”

That was his first for the club. Jermaine McGlashan also got off the mark for the Gills, with the equaliser.

McGlashan could have had more, as he had a host of chances.

“It was a great finish (for the goal),” said Loft. “He cut inside and found the corner brilliantly.

“It’s just a shame he then missed an open goal two minutes later and then hit one out for a throw-in. He got some stick for that but when he and Dack came on (in the second half) they changed the game and they did really well.”

Loft admitted the Gills weren’t at it in the first half but went for it in the second, even when down to 10 men when Joe Martin saw red.

“The boys showed great attitude, especially with 10 men,” he said.

“When we went down to 10 men we played really well. We looked fit, we looked sharp and we looked a much bigger threat than them.

“I don’t think we played brilliantly first half. We didn’t move the ball quick enough and we didn’t pass and move them around. I felt we could have done better but we were the outstanding in the second half.

“People showed they want to fight for the club and to go and get some wins.”
