Gillingham manager Mark Bonner wants to see more consistency from defender Shad Ogie after improved display at Fleetwood Town

Gillingham defender Shad Ogie needs to produce better performances on a more consistent basis.

That’s the verdict of Gills boss Mark Bonner after Ogie impressed in the goalless draw at Fleetwood in League 2 on Saturday.

The former Leyton Orient defender turned 23 this week and celebrated with a much-improved display alongside skipper Max Ehmer with Conor Masterson still ruled out by injury.

“We’ve been waiting for it,” reflected Bonner. “That’s much better, much more of a level.

“The key is consistency. I’m not interested in players that can play well every now and again, or turn up some days and not others, that doesn’t get you anywhere.

“It doesn’t get you a career as a good footballer, it doesn’t win you games.

“So we’ve got to become a team that is (at a) high level every day and pushing to get better.

“If we do that then physically we’ll be able to cope better, we’ll take the ball more and be more confident.

“Then, rather than just grind out results - which by the way we are really happy with and we’ll take - we have to keep thinking ahead.

“How are we going to sustain it, maintain it and improve so we are more dominant than just the result that we’ve taken (on Saturday). I thought his performance was very good.”

The Gills boss also praised goalkeeper Jake Turner’s start to the season.

Turner made it successive clean sheets at Fleetwood and Bonner is happy with his performance levels.

“I thought Jake has started the season brilliantly, really well,” said the Gills boss.

“He’s getting more and more confident to come and take things, punch amongst bodies which relieves huge pressure off your back four.

“I’m really happy with how he’s doing.”
