An injury to striker Scott Kashket makes a potential move out of Gillingham a little trickier.
Manager Neil Harris says he’s open to discuss opportunities with Gillingham’s fringe players - including Kashket - who may want to seek a move into non-league this week.
The National League transfer window closes on Thursday, March 23, and up until that point the Gills can offload players if they feel it’s the right thing to do.
Kashket was back training and available for selection last weekend but has had a set-back with his groin, which could keep him out for another week. He hasn’t played a competitive game since January 28.
Harris, speaking before the weekend, said: “I don’t know if that means a loan move to the National League for him is still going to be feasible at this stage.
“If he is here, he is available for selection when fit. Scott wasn’t in the plans (last week) because he was further down the pecking order than the four or five in front of him.
“When players have been injured and come back they have to accept that when a team is doing well they have to be patient.
“He fits into the bracket where if they are in the building they will be treated with utmost respect and if available for selection, I will consider them. If players want to leave and pursue further opportunities then I am 100% supportive of that as well.”
Forward Jordan Green, meanwhile, has already been told his future lies elsewhere while for others there could be the chance of seeing out the season with some much needed football ahead of a chance to claim a place in the team next term.
Jayden Clarke - a January signing from Dulwich Hamlet - hasn’t featured since he moved to the club and may head out on loan. Ethan Coleman and Stuart O’Keefe are both on the fringes and Harris may want to keep them close incase of any injuries or suspensions.
Joe Gbode is already on loan at Hastings, having agreed to sign a professional deal ahead of completing his scholarship with the Gills this season. Young right-back Ike Orji remains at Isthmian South East promotion chasers Chatham Town while midfielder Josh Chambers has seen plenty of action for National South Worthing this season, where he remains.
Harris said: “My stance is always the same, if players want to go and play, those on the fringes or who aren’t playing regularly, I am 100% supportive, as long as it doesn’t leave us short and it’s the right move for the player and the club.
“If players are playing regularly then they aren’t available, obviously, because we are going along great guns. The lads on the fringes, if they want to go and play they know my door is open, they know they can approach me and have a sensible conversation and I will try and facilitate what is best for them and their families.”
