The enjoyment has returned to Gillingham, said Saturday’s match-winner Lee Martin.
Steve Lovell took over as caretaker-boss on Thursday and was quick to implement his own ideas.
Martin certainly enjoyed the change of approach.
He said: “Ever since Loves has come in, training has been high intensity, the enjoyment has been there.
“Loves has always been a top man, always been a bit on the outside, but now he has his opportunity and I think he has been outstanding.
"He has come in with a fresh approach, to go out and enjoy ourselves. Sometimes that works, going back to basics.
“This is something we love doing, it is what we started doing as kids, it was a hobby. It is a job now, but we’ve got that enjoyment back. I think we showed that and the boys worked together, we really enjoyed it.”
Martin scored the winner midway through the first half.
He said: “The boys were brilliant, everyone worked their socks off. We could have gone two or three up first half, we made it a little more difficult second half, rode the storm, but that is togetherness that we’ve shown.
"With what has gone on off the field, the boys have been outstanding.
“We were up against a good Peterborough team and that is encouraging from our point of view. Maybe we haven’t created as many chances as we should have this season but on this performance we showed what we are capable of.”
Martin ran to the opposite side of the pitch after scoring, to celebrate with his parents.
“They have heard some of the bad things and sometimes it is nice to give them a bit of joy,” he said. “They see every game.”
His mum certainly looked like she enjoyed the goal and Martin added: “It’s her boy and I am sure if my boy scored in years to come I would be absolutely delighted too.”
