Gills boss Justin Edinburgh won’t walk away – but he’s unsure if chairman Paul Scally still backs him.
Edinburgh admitted Wednesday night’s FA Cup defeat to non-league Brackley Town was the lowest point this season in a campaign that has so far seen few highlights.
He still believes he can turn Gillingham’s fortunes around, but Mr Scally will have the final say.
Edinburgh said: “I never walk away and I have never shirked a challenge in my life.
“I have been in football since I was 16, that’s 30 years now. I have never walked away and never will.
“I 100% believe that I can turn it around.”
Edinburgh met with Mr Scally to discuss Gills’ current form on Monday. When asked whether he will get more time following the FA Cup exit, Edinburgh said: “The chairman has been absolutely fully supportive but I can’t answer that question. I believe I can make things right.”
Brackley, who play in the National League North, beat the Gills 4-3 in extra-time to progress to round two, where they will face Blackpool.
Edinburgh admitted the defeat was “100%” the low point of the season, saying: “You don’t get too many bites at the cherry. We’ve had two and it’s just unacceptable.
“I take full responsibility for it. I am not putting the blame on anyone else.”
Edinburgh was a picture of anguish at the final whistle and was disappointed his players had let him down so badly.
He said: “I feel totally let down, but I have to take responsibility.
“Everyone knows their roles and responsibilities. It is just so frustrating and I am hurt.
“It is no good me feeling sorry for myself. I have got to get on with it.
“Credit to Brackley, I have been in their position. It’s a fantastic competition and for clubs like them in their position it’s a huge windfall and good luck to them.”
