Ryan Jackson has got the taste for a long-range shot.

Jackson scored a belter against Shrewsbury on Saturday for his first-ever Gills goal, and almost scored a second from distance.

“Get me on the edge of the box, clear space and I will try it again,” said the right-back.

“I have always known I have got a hard shot but I never really get a chance to be in those positions for it to open up and have a free shot like that. When I did, I just thought, I’m doing this.”

The ball flew into the top corner and Jackson said afterwards it was probably his best goal so far.

His last goal, for Macclesfield in the Conference two years ago, was a left-footed effort from the edge of the box.

He said: “I saw the ball coming out on the edge of the box and my first thought was to just hit it as hard as I can and get my head over it. I saw it rise and go in the bin.”

His second attempt, in stoppage time, was low and saved by the keeper.

“I just tried to hit it as hard as I can," he said. "It skidded off the surface and the keeper has managed to parry it out.”
