Southampton loanee Alfie Jones' performance typified Gillingham's overall performance against Coventry according to boss Steve Evans

Alfie Jones’ performance for Gillingham on Saturday was a prime example of the hit and miss showing from the team against Coventry.

Jones was a big plus for the Gills in the midweek draw against Blackpool but took some time to get it right in League 1 against the Sky Blues at the weekend.

Gills boss Steve Evans said: “I thought Alfie was probably the catalyst for us being poor first half and very good second half.

“We said to him, ‘there is a crowd of 6,000 home supporters in one stand, does that frighten you?’ Of course the answer was no and I think he demonstrated that with his performance second half.

“We began to get on the ball and our passing and cohesion was fine.

“Our decision making with set plays in the final third wasn’t quite right but that is where you put your trust in players.”

Alex Jakubiak – another loanee – also impressed in the second half. He missed a great chance in the opening 45 minutes, though.

Evans said: “Alex should score shouldn’t he? I said that to him. He holds the defender off and shifts it well to get a strike, but he should score.

“We should turn around 1-1 at half-time.

“Alex was not so good first half but very impressive second. He was a real driving force on that left hand side second half, causing them a real problem. He had three or four strikes where they got their bodies in there.”
