The British Boxing Board of Control will investigate the scoring of a world light-welterweight contest.

Kent boxing referee Ian John-Lewis was one of the three judges at ringside as Josh Taylor beat Jack Catterall in a controversial split points decision in Glasgow on Saturday night.

Many observers, including all the Sky Sports pundits, felt it was a fight dominated by Catterall, who put Taylor down in the eighth round.

But two judges, including John-Lewis, scored the fight in favour of Taylor, who retained his WBA, WBC, IBF and WBO belts as a result.

John-Lewis scored the fight 114-111 in favour of Taylor with Victor Loughlin giving the fight to Taylor 113-112. Howard Foster was the only judge to rule in favour of Catterall, 113-112.

John-Lewis is one of the most experienced boxing referees in the country, having officiated bouts for the likes of Anthony Joshua, Dillian Whyte, Tony Bellew and Vitali Klitschko during a long officiating career.

In a brief statement, the British Boxing Board of Control have said: "The British Boxing Board of Control will be investigating the scoring of this contest and will advise accordingly."

However, they do not have the power to change the result.

Catterall's coach Nigel Travis tweeted: "There are no words I can say to express my disgust at what happened.

"Jack clearly won and should be the undisputed World champion but because of incompetent judges, he’s not. It’s embarrassing how our sport destroys itself."
