Josh Wright is being linked with a move to Gillingham’s rivals Charlton.
His goal record from midfield last season meant he was always likely to attract attention this summer.
The 27-year-old scored 14 goals for the Gills last season, 11 of them coming after the turn of the year and was named supporters’ player-of-the-year.
Wright made history during the season by scoring a hat-trick of penalties inside 10 minutes against his former club Scunthorpe United.
By then he had lost the captain’s armband after head coach Ady Pennock opted to hand the on-field responsibility to defender Max Ehmer. It was a decision that Wright admitted hurt.
But despite the blow he enjoyed his best spell in a Gills shirt under Pennock and attracted plenty of interest, with Nottingham Forest among the potential suitors. They were linked with a £100,000 move last season.
Losing Wright would be a blow to the Gills fans, particularly if it was to their near neighbours and League 1 rivals Charlton. They have already seen popular striker Cody McDonald and playmaker Bradley Dack leave this summer.
Wright has a year left on his contract having signed for the club under previous boss Justin Edinburgh, after a spell training for the club led to a contract.
He is in his second spell with the club, helping the Gills to play-off glory during the first time at Priestfield, during a loan move, ironically from Charlton.
His career started at the Valley and his brother, Mark Wright, tweeted: “Whether it's Gills or Charlton for him this year, it's 2 clubs that are so close to his heart. That means more to him than anything #history.”
