Gillingham are heading into a big match tonight with good news on the injury front.
Midfielders Kyle Dempsey, Callum Slattery and Tommy O’Connor are all expected to available to face Lincoln City in the match at Priestfield, which kicks off at 6pm.
Dempsey and Slattery both picked up knocks in the 2-2 draw against Sunderland at the weekend and were doubts heading into the match on Friday. Boss Steve Evans has now said both are fit and available.
O’Connor was missing for the game against Sunderland with a groin injury but he’s also been declared fit. Defender Christian Maghoma, meanwhile, is back training following an ankle injury but may still be a doubt for selection.
The Gills are also expected to involve new signing James Morton, a new arrival on loan from Bristol City. The 21-year-old left-sided midfielder will add to the competition in the middle of the park.
“He comes into a good group,” Evans said.
“He will get on well with the players we have got and I think he will help us.
“He is a real good player. I don’t want to make him out what he is not but I think when we signed Callum Slattery (on loan from Southampton) a lot of the supporters would have said ‘who is he?’ They wouldn’t be entitled to know him.
“I am sure they thought the same when we announced the signing of James but the kid’s performances and everything else around him will speak for itself.”
Evans was unable to bring in a new striker before deadline day and knows his forwards will have to be on top form to get a goal past Lincoln. The Imps boast an impressive away record, conceding just twice in their last nine league games away from home.
Evans said: “It will be a tough game or us but we have been in good form, we have some good players and we are looking forward to it.
“They have a flat back four that becomes a flat seven as soon as you get possession of the ball and it is really difficult. We have given the players direction.”
