Dempsey, 27, headed in a goal after just four minutes infront of a crowd close to 80,000 at Wembley as Bolton beat their League 1 rivals Plymouth Argyle 4-0. He also claimed an assist as The Trotters scored a second through Dion Charles after 10 minutes.

He had other chances to score in the match as Bolton lifted the trophy.

The midfielder spent 18 months with the Gills between the summer of 2020 and January 2022, playing 61 league games.

Dempsey has endured a tough time at Bolton because of injuries and has had off the field issues too. Last month he admitted assaulting a doorman after Bolton's pre-season friendly against another of his former teams, Carlisle, in July.

He and his father are set to appear at Carlisle Crown Court to give evidence on April 11.
