Alex Lacey is determined to win back his place in Gillingham's defence this season.
The defender missed much of 2017/18 because of injury but now he's fit and raring to go again.
There's real competition for places at the back and Lacey is relishing the challenge.
He said: "I want to get in the team and make that spot my own.
"Last season was a frustrating one being out injured, so if I can come back and stay injury-free and stay in the team I'll be happy.
"The first few games I played, then managed to get injured and that ruled me out for most of the rest of the season.
"I was playing catch-up, fitness-wise, when I was back. It was a frustrating season and I'm hoping this season I can stay injury-free and do better and stay in the team.
"The gaffer has said it's a level playing field – anyone who's doing the best for the team at the minute. Hopefully I can get in the team come August 4.
"It's just down to working hard and making sure I give myself the best opportunity."
Lacey was in the Gills side which lost 2-0 at Ebbsfleet on Saturday. He played the full 90 minutes, starting alongside Finn O'Mara at centre-half.
"It wasn't the best performance or the result we wanted but its another 90 minutes gaining fitness towards the start of the season," Lacey said.
"We're playing again on Tuesday and Saturday so it's important to get those minutes in to make sure we're prepared.
"We'll work on shape as we get closer to the season to make sure we're more organised and have everything down to a tee.
"We're all looking forward to the season starting. Accrington away will be a tough game and we're counting down the days."
