Walsall had until Sunday to make up their mind about whether they wanted to play the game this coming Saturday, and have decided to keep the scheduled fixture, despite missing three potential starters.

Left-back Liam Gordon’s a regular starter for the Saddlers but he’ll be representing Guyana in their Gold Cup qualifying double-header against Guatemala over the international weekend.

Fellow defensive mainstay David Okagbue will also miss the match at Gillingham after being selected for Republic of Ireland’s under-21s. Ronan Maher - currently on loan at Tamworth - and Darius Lipsiuc - who hasn’t played since joining on loan from Stoke City - are in the same squad.

Goalkeeper Tommy Simkin is on loan from Stoke City and has been a regular for Walsall this season but was named on the bench when they played at Bromley on Thursday night, with Sam Hornby starting instead.

Simkin has been called up to the England under-21s while Ethan Wheatley, who has a handful of first-team appearances after joining on loan from Manchester United, will join up with the under-19s.

Walsall are currently three points clear at the top of League 2 but have been struggling for wins of late, heading to Priestfield without a victory in any of their last five League 2 outings.

The Gills recently picked up a point at Walsall’s Bescot Stadium thanks to Robbie McKenzie’s equaliser. That match was played on a Tuesday night after the original date had been moved from mid-November, with Walsall on that occasion deciding to postpone the fixture due to international players missing.
