Olly Lee admits he doesn’t know what’s in store for him once his deal with Gillingham expires at the end of January.
Parent club Hearts have a new manager in charge and may want him to return to Tynecastle.
Lee’s been enjoying his loan spell with the Gills, however, starting regularly in a free role behind the front two. It’s a position he’s thrived in but he’s not looking too far ahead.
He said: “Ever since I started playing football I have just wanted to be playing and enjoying it and where my family are happy, all of these things come into it.
“I just want to enjoy my football, that’s the main thing for me.
“We will wait and see what happens. I am just enjoying being out on the pitch at the moment and whatever conversations have to be had in January, we will let them take place then.”
Former Barnsley manager Daniel Stendel has taken over at Hearts and he has much to do, with the club struggling towards the foot of the Scottish Premiership table.
Lee is one of 10 players out on loan and the new man in charge will have to assess all of them. The midfielder’s deal at the Gills runs until January 27.
Speaking on Tuesday, Lee said he hasn’t spoken with Stendel but added: “He only got in last week and he has quite a lot on his plate. They lost at the weekend, they had Celtic on Wednesday and another game on Saturday. It’s been a tough period.
“I imagine I will speak to him at some point but we will wait and see.”
The Gills are about to start their festive campaign, with four league games ahead of their FA Cup match against Premier League West Ham.
Christmas has always been about football in the Lee household and he can’t wait for the busy schedule to begin.
“I love it,” he said. “I have grown up with the Boxing Day games. I don’t ever feel like I am missing out on anything because it is what I have grown up with and what I have been part of. I enjoy those games and the Christmas period is pretty special. I can’t wait!”
His two-and-a-half-year-old son Alfie is sure to be cheering him on, too. He was there at Priestfield to watch daddy score one of the goals to beat Doncaster in the FA Cup second round.
Lee said: “I really enjoyed that goal, it was right in front of my little man and it was a real sweet moment for the family.
“He is my lucky charm, I tend to do alright when he is there. He has been to two or three home games and that was his first game in a little while. I said I would score for him and it was the first time he knew daddy had scored.
“I went over to celebrate in front of him. I do a little A sign for him when I celebrate my goals. It was a nice moment.”
