Gillingham coach Steve Lovell insists that the club’s future is more important than his own.
Lovell and the rest of the management team, including head coach Ady Pennock, have yet to be given any firm assurances over whether they are wanted next season.
“We don’t know what is happening regarding next year,” said Lovell. “We are just working for today and tomorrow and we are working to get this season secure – that is our aim.
“Whatever happens after that, whether they get anyone in or if we are here, I am not bothered.
“I am on about us now trying to save this club going down to League 2, that is our aim, to keep us in League 1. That is what we are fighting hard for.”
Chairman Paul Scally has asked the management team to look for new targets and to plan for pre-season but that doesn’t guarantee them a job next season, especially with relegation an increasing possibility.
Gillingham are two points above the drop zone and have lost their last four games.
Lovell is focusing on Millwall at the weekend and preparing the squad as best they can. He said: “What a great game to bounce back to, against Millwall, I can’t wait for it already.
“I wish all our players would have that same sentiment and by Saturday they will.”
Lovell certainly isn’t short of desire when it comes to the Gills, having served them well as a player, community officer, youth boss, caretaker manager and now a coach in his second spell.
“This is a club we all love,” he said. “My involvement in this club goes back years and years, I love everything about it and that is the big thing, it’s the passion and desire. The manager (Ady Pennock) is the same.”
