Coach Steve Lovell believes Gillingham are better positioned now despite a month of uncertainty.
The Gills are unbeaten in four matches heading into their home clash with Sheffield United on Saturday.
Whoever comes in to replace the caretaker team – with Newport County boss Justin Edinburgh looking the most likely candidate – the foundations are now in place to finish the season on a high.
Lovell said: “From a month ago, when we were put in charge, we have brought it on. It is in a place now where whoever comes in can take it onwards, which is what we were asked to do.
“If someone comes in then it is in a better place than it was a month ago. Not just results-wise, also from a club perspective, because results do breed confidence and there is a great buzz around the place."
For the last month Lovell, along with Andy Hessenthaler, Mark Patterson and Darren Hare, have taken charge of the first team.
They have prepared the side for the visit of League 1’s big guns Sheffield United this week despite speculation that a new manager will be in place imminently, even before this weekend.
Lovell said: “We work together on a daily basis and we’re preparing for Saturday in the same way until we are told otherwise.”
