Gillingham took a point off the League 1 leaders on Saturday but remain caught up in a frantic scrap for survival.
Despite earning a point at Luton following an excellent 2-2 draw, the Gills are now just two points clear of the bottom four.
Amazingly, they are also just one point off the midway mark in the table.
“It is unbelievable,” said Gills boss Steve Lovell.
“It was an excellent performance on Saturday and we got something from the league leaders who are on a tremendous run.
“We will take confidence into next week’s game (at AFC Wimbledon), which is now a massive game.
“It is so close, two wins and you are up near the top.”
Just nine points separate Plymouth in 12th and bottom side Bradford.
All of those teams are heading into the final few games with the fear of relegation hanging over them.
The Gills, for their part, have one of the best looking run-ins, including home games against three of the teams fighting for survival.
Lovell said: “There are still eight games to go and it is so tight but it is in our hands. We have four games at home, including Rochdale, Plymouth, Shrewsbury, all big games against bottom-half sides.
“It will be a big game (next) Saturday.”
Gills’ run-in also sees them head to bottom club Bradford over the Easter weekend. They are just two wins away from achieving the 50 points that they are targetting for survival.
Lovell’s men will head into next weekend’s game buoyed by an impressive weekend performance, twice coming from behind against the Hatters – a side without a defeat in five months.
“We knew we had to be on our game and more defensively,” said Lovell.
“We worked in the week on players keeping to their roles and responsibilities and and not worrying about other people, just doing the job and we did it.
“We nullified them quite well. It was a good point and a very good performance.”
Lovell was content with a draw and added: “I bet there have been a few teams who have gone there and been close to getting a win.
“I will take away the fact that we have performed really well against the top side and I think we should have won it. I really do believe that with the chances that we had, clear-cut chances more than them.
“But if someone said ‘would you take a point against Luton?’ I would have said ‘yes, of course’.”
