Gillingham's management team are demanding more after dropping deeper into relegation trouble on Saturday.

Gills are just one place and two points above the drop zone following a 3-2 defeat at MK Dons.

It was their fourth straight defeat and they have just five games left to ensure they avoid dropping down to League 2.

First-team coach Steve Lovell said: “Some of them have got to start showing a little bit more, for the supporters, the club, their families and for us. They have to.

“The five games coming up are massive. The boys have got to try and get us out of the mess we are in.

“We (the management) won’t change our attitude. We are all together in this and we are fighting towards what we want to do. The boys have to help us. They are the ones who are doing it on the Saturday and if we have a positive five games then we will get out of it.”

The players were given an honest assessment from the management after the game, as the Gills threw away a point having battled back from 2-0 down.

“We will stand up and point fingers,” said Lovell. “It is important that fingers are pointed because those players need to understand what is required of them and what we are looking for.

“Not all of them, just one or two, they can do a lot better, they need to. It is a job and how many millions of people would love to do this job?

“It is a great job and the game of football is a job you should love and enjoy. If you are not enjoying it you shouldn’t be in football.”

Gillingham were backed by 650 fans in Milton Keynes and they showed their frustrations by booing the team off at half-time.

Lovell said: “It is fantastic to have the amount of supporters there that we did, after the first half I would be booing with them. First-half performance they had every right to.

“Second half it was better and had we got a point we would have been happier. But to concede (again) and not get anything is disappointing.

“We had a frank talk in the dressing room, we have got five massive games to come. They have to look to themselves, roll their sleeves up and dig deep. They have to go for it.”
