Gillingham manager Steve Evans felt that Accrington’s player-of-the-match Jerome Opoku was lucky to have avoided a red card.

The on-loan Fulham defender, named the home club’s star man against the Gills on Saturday, had a coming together with Stuart O’Keefe in the first half, with the midfielder left on the floor following an alleged stamp.

Opoku trod down on O’Keefe’s ankle, leaving the Gills man livid at the match official for doing nothing more than have a word in the Accrington player’s ear.

Gills boss Evans said: “We have seen it and he has got stamped on. I didn’t want to mention it and I didn’t get involved in it (at the time). You only have to see the reaction of Stuart O’Keefe.

“You ask your analyst and people behind you and they said he got stood on late but I am sure the referee’s assessor has seen it like we have.

“I personally didn’t see it. I was too busy shouting across the pitch because we were all over the place at the time, but it’s a stamp for sure and that’s got no place in football.

“He’s a young man who is on loan from a very good club in the Championship, he will have gone home disappointed with himself.”
