Striker Cody McDonald insists he has nothing to prove on his return to the Ricoh Arena.

McDonald struggled to hold down a first-team place at Coventry during a two-year spell with the club.

He’s now hoping to grab the limelight when Gillingham take on the Sky Blues on Friday.

McDonald said: “People have their own opinions of players. It doesn’t matter to me if people think I am rubbish, good or whatever.

“I do things to prove to myself that I should be at this level and that’s all that matters to me. People have their own opinions but that is water off a duck’s back to me. I am looking forward to it. It’s a place that I know well and it will be nice to go back there, ruin their show and come back with a win but we will see.

“If we perform like we have in the last few games, then there is no reason why we can’t do that. We will be going into it full of confidence.

“It is a nice place to play football. It is a lovely ground and I am hearing it is a sell-out as well. It will be a great atmosphere and it’s on Sky. It is an opportunity for some of the lads to put their names out there.”

McDonald signed for Coventry in the summer of 2011 from Norwich, having finished the previous season as top scorer with Gillingham while on a season-long loan.
He scored eight goals for the Sky Blues in 47 appearances, many of those coming off the bench. He eventually rejoined the Gills permanently last summer.
