Medway Park is set to stage two major international sporting events in the coming days.
The venue will be hosting an international women’s handball tournament for the first time in the UK this weekend.
London Olympia will be taking on Swiss side LK Zug at Medway Park in the women’s European Handball Federation Challenge Cup.
That will be followed by Tuesday’s table tennis international between England and Slovenia in a European Women’s Team Championships qualification match. It will be the first time Medway has hosted an international table tennis competition.
Medway Cllr Howard Doe said: “It is a great honour for Medway Park to have been chosen to host the first ever Challenge Cup match in the United Kingdom and we are also delighted to hold our first international table tennis fixture.
“Both sports offer fast-paced action and I hope the people of Medway will take up the opportunity of watching international athletes in action right on their doorstep.”
Handball action at Medway Park will be spread over the whole weekend.
The action gets under way on Saturday when a Medway Dragons team takes on London Olympia Women in a development match (2pm).
Later that afternoon London Olympia take on Coventry Sharks in a Super8 contest (4pm) before the main event, when LK Zug get to take on the Olympia side (6pm). The following day they meet again, at 11.30am. At 2pm on Sunday they will face the Medway Dragons under-18 Girls.
In Tuesday’s table tennis action, England women, featuring Commonwealth Games medallists Kelly Sibley and Tin-Tin Ho, will be taking on Slovenia at Medway Park (6pm).
With only one place separating the two teams in the world rankings, and with both having been beaten by Olympic silver medallists Germany in their first group matches, the tie will go a long way to deciding both sides’ qualifying fate.
