Medway United are gearing up for a charity match where they hope to be up against some former Gillingham legends.
The match on Saturday, May 25 will be raising money for Head in the Game, an award-winning charity centred around mental health and well-being, driven by bringing groups of people together to play football.
United’s opponents at Star Meadow in Gillingham will be the ME7 Podcast and together they’re hoping to raise £1,000 before the match.
Head in the Game are working hard to eradicate suicide from society.
The charity say that they are "using sport as a support tool to create safe and secure environments, focusing on the science of why brains act the way they do."
They add that their sessions are “a lifeline to many who historically struggle to share their emotions.”
A raffle is taking place in the bar with some impressive prizes to be won, including a worn Wales international shirt signed by Gillingham midfielder Jonny Williams. He’s also donated a pair of boots.
Medway United have been working hard within the last few years to raise awareness of mental health within the club through their mental health champion Ryan Abrahall.
A club spokesperson said: “Within our club we also have many people that have stories to relate to mental health that has affected there life's in some way or another.
“The ME7 Podcast have recently also been making regular shows related to men’s mental health to spread the word within their Gillingham Football Club Podcast and having monthly shows just based on mental health.
“Medway United and The ME7 Podcast and various Gillingham socials and a few Gillingham FC legends are coming together to play a charity football match to raise awareness and much-needed funds for the charity Head in the Game which brings football and mental health together.”
This event will be sponsored by Dan Welch Scaffolding. You can donate through their JustGiving page here.
