Callum Reilly has left Gillingham after his contract was terminated by mutual agreement.
The midfielder has been involved in first team games over pre-season but boss Steve Evans has decided that the 25-year-old doesn't fit into his plans.
Reilly moved to the Gills permanently last summer, after an initial loan spell from Bury, but had an injury-hit campaign.
The Gills confirmed on Friday that Reilly's contract had been terminated with immediate effect. He had another season to run on a two-year deal.
He leaves the Gills after making 40 league appearances and scoring five goals.
Evans said: "Since I have arrived at the club he has conducted himself in exemplary fashion and we have had no hesitation including him in a lot of our pre-season fixtures.
"However, looking at the permutations available for selection in the midfield area we felt he could be surplus to requirements and, following that chat, Callum agreed that it was best for all parties that he moved on.
Gillingham have been busy in the transfer market this summer, signing nine new players for the coming season.
Two agreed terms on Thursday with former Charlton winger Mark Marshall joining along with striker Mikael Mandron.
More players could leave the Gills, with another midfielder Josh Rees having been left out of the first team during pre-season, instead playing with the under-23s. Bradley Stevenson hasn't been involved either.
