Gillingham 2 Chesterfield 1
Gillingham remain unbeaten in their last nine league games at the Priestfield Stadium after goals from Adam Miller and Simeon Jackson guided them to a 2-1 win over Chesterfield in League 2 on Saturday.
Manager Mark Stimson named an unchanged side for the first time this season after deciding to keep faith with the team that drew 0-0 with Stockport in the FA Cup second round last Saturday.
The visitors started brightly and came close to opening the scoring after 13 minutes when Jack Lester hit a shot from the edge of the area which flew just wide of the goal.
Gillingham opened the scoring on 18 minutes when Andy Barcham used his pace to get past Chesterfield right-back Phil Picken, before delivering a cross which was swept home by Adam Miller from close range.
Chesterfield pushed forward in search of an equaliser and came close to pulling level after 29 minutes when Gillingham keeper Simon Royce was forced to punch the ball clear from underneath his crossbar, after a well taken free-kick from Darren Currie caused panic in the area.
The away sides best chance to pull level came on the stroke of half-time when Lloyd Kerry hit a powerful long-range shot which was well saved by Royce.
The ball was up the other end almost immediately when Miller flicked Garry Richards pass into the path of Simeon Jackson, who took it into the area before brilliantly chipping the ball over the onrushing Trevor Carson to make it 2-0.
In the second half, Gillingham continued to push forward and almost grabbed a third goal after 53 minutes when Richards shot wide from John Nutters corner.
Chesterfield were handed a lifeline on the hour mark when Currie got on the end of a loose ball inside the area, before crossing the ball into the path of Jack Lester who slotted home from close range.
Jackson then headed wide from Millers free-kick before substitute Nicky Southall saw his effort blocked by Chesterfield defender Aaron Downes.
Chesterfield pushed for an equaliser and the Gills had goalkeeper Royce to thank for ensuring they took maximum points when he got down well to push Lesters driven shot round the post on 78 minutes.
Gills boss Mark Stimson was full of praise for Miller and Jackson.
He said: "Chances were few and far between today but when the pair of them were called upon to finish off, they both did so really well.
"It was good for them to get a goal each because at the moment they are leading the front line. People may not see Miller as a goalscorer but I definitely see him as a goal threat."
