Boss Justin Edinburgh wasn’t holding keeper Glenn Morris responsible for the goals conceded on Saturday.
Morris was a surprise inclusion in the starting XI as he replaced regular keeper and last season’s player-of-the-year Stuart Nelson.
But apart from the goals, Colchester rarely troubled the 31-year-old, who was making his home debut for the Gills.
“I don’t think Glenn has had a real save to make in the game,” said Edinburgh. “I don’t feel he could have done anything about the two goals so it shows the dominance in the game.”
Morris, a summer signing by former boss Peter Taylor, is out of contract in the summer and Edinburgh chose Saturday’s match to have a look at the former Aldershot man in league action.
It was Morris’ first league start for the Gills and only his second appearance in League 1 for the club, having replaced the injured Nelson during the first game of the season at MK Dons.
His two other appearances came in the early rounds of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.
“Everyone who has been given a chance deserves it,” said Edinburgh.
“Glenn has done very well. He is an experienced campaigner and I need to be fair to everyone between now and the end of the season and make sure I have had a good look at everyone, so when I do make decisions at the end of the season they are the correct ones. He came in and did well.”
