Gillingham goalkeeper Glenn Morris reacts to their 1-0 League 2 victory over MK Dons

Gillingham goalkeeper Glenn Morris pulled off two crucial saves to deny MK Dons on Saturday but praised his team-mates for their part in the win.

Morris saved well from Joe Pritchard midway through the first half and then got down well to deny Liam Kelly late on as MK Dons desperately looked for a way of salvaging something from the match. The Gills won it 1-0.

Report: MK Dons 0 Gillingham 1

The Gillingham keeper admitted he couldn't remember much about the late save which was eventually scrambled clear.

He said: “It was just one of those where you put your body on the line, just dive in front of the ball and I think it hit my arm and it scrambled around and it was just a bit of a melee.

“You knew it was going to be our day when things like that go in our favour and we managed to clear it. That's what we had to do. We had to put our bodies on the line, we had to defend and that's what we did for 96 minutes.

“We showed last week (in a 1-0 win over Salford) that you have to work hard, you have to defend and do your jobs. If you do that then you'll get a chance at the other end.

“It was a goal (scored by Robbie McKenzie) that I didn't even see myself to be honest so I don't really know what happened but that's why you want to have a clean sheet. You give yourself a chance. That's what Gillingham is about and that's what we've been about over the last few seasons.

“I think you can see that we're really working hard and trying to correct a few things from before.

“We were really happy with the win. Lots of people put in maximum effort, which is what you expect, but it's not easy. Keeping clean sheets in this league is hard work.

“They're a very good footballing side and you could see they move the ball a lot. If you don't stay with your runners, if you don't do your jobs, then they'll score. Any mistake, they'll get a chance. There weren’t too many. The boys were just amazing in front of me and that's what we have to do.”

Back-to-back wins follows back-to-back defeats and the confidence has returned for the Gills. They’ll be looking to make it three in a row when they host Cheltenham Town at Priestfield on Friday night.

Morris said: “You just want to follow it up with a good performance and make sure that you put in the right mindset and effort and get the game plan right.

“You try and back it up and that's all you can do, just tick off the next game and the next game and take it from there.

“We've got two wins on the bounce but we're not going to get carried away. You have to work hard to get wins in this league and it's not going to be easy.

“When you're losing games, the confidence soon goes. So you have to take these wins as positives and try and build on it.

“You've just got to keep doing what got us the wins, which is the hard work. We can't step away from that. We can't come off the gas. We've got to make sure we're driving standards and picking up points.”
